GEORGETOWN — The Georgetown County School District could keep the traditional academic calendar until at least the 2022-2023 school year, if approved by the school board at next month's meeting.

According to the proposed calendar presented to board members at the Feb. 15 workshop, teachers will return to class on Aug. 8 and students on Aug. 15.

Veterans Day is considered a half day for students and staff, allowing them to participate in area activities to celebrate the holiday.

The first semester after the Christmas holidays will start on January 12 and the academic year will end on June 2.

According to the traditional calendar for the current academic year, teachers returned on August 11 and students began on August 18. The first term ended in mid-January after the Christmas break and school ended on 3 June for the summer holidays.

The district had previously proposed a modified calendar that would have had students have more days off, but school would have started earlier, which Superintendent Keith Price said many parents opposed.

Price reiterated at the workshop that he wanted to hold public meetings to get feedback that would help the district decide whether a modified calendar could be proposed in the future.

"That's why we didn't give up; We haven't moved forward with it," Price said. "We need to work with him a little bit more at this point to determine where we're going to go."

GEORGETOWN – Georgetown County students could see more vacation days in the future, but they're starting school under proposed changes to the district's academic calendar for the next two years.

District human resources director Chalice Waits told the school board at the Jan. 18 meeting that the calendar planning committee had seen other school districts in South Carolina move to the modified year format and wanted to follow suit.

The flexible year calendar would still allow for eight weeks of summer vacation and would still require students to attend 180 days of classes, but those days would be more spread out throughout the year.

Saint Andrew School

The main difference between the two calendars is that students have one week off each week. Students traditionally have one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for spring break.

Students will now have a week off in October, November and April, in addition to the usual two weeks for Christmas in the modified version of the year.

In the 2023-24 academic year, teachers will begin on July 26 and students will return on August 2. The last day of the term will be December 20 and the academic year will end on May 24.
