In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year during its meeting Tuesday evening.

With the changed calendar, students will have a shorter summer and instead have two weeks of vacation during the fall and spring semesters. One week each semester will be remedial, allowing students in need of academic assistance the opportunity to receive it.

The revised 2023-24 calendar asks students to start classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. The holidays are scheduled for October. 2-13 and October. 2-6 are prayer weeks. Thanksgiving will be November. 22-24. The Christmas holidays for students are December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break will fall on April 1-12 with prayer week set for April 1-5, 2024. The last day of school is Thursday, May. 30, 2024

Other holidays in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; weather makeup day on friday october. 20; Martin Luther King Jr. Day. on January 15; holidays and President's Day Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; weather makeup day on Thursday, March 28; and Good Friday holiday on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Councilman Jason Crane is the only vote against the calendar. During the meeting, he also expressed concern about how the calendar would affect many programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and arts programs.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year during its meeting Tuesday.

"I worry that the short summer will … affect athletics, the club and Gateway," Crain said after the meeting. "I have confidence that the district will handle it, but I also feel it is a bad thing for us." I choose according to my conscience."

Crane also says he supports the idea of ​​a modified calendar, with just two weeks of rest each semester giving him a break.

"…I'm not so sure that we need two weeks for this break," Crain said. "I thought one week would be enough, but the board voted for what we voted for, and I will support progress."

During the meeting, County Superintendent Aiken King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 would be difficult for the team's training, as there are usually three weeks of summer team camp. But there are options for team managers.

Lawrence notes that the competition is organized by the state and there are various school programs throughout South Carolina. He also suggests holding a week-long camp in the summer and using prayer times for other group camps.

"Yes, you normally have three-week team camps in the summer, but what about one-week camps in the summer and take advantage of those advocacy sessions for other camps? group," said Lawrence. "Two week team camp in the summer and one in the fall. I'm just saying that people have to look at things a little differently and adapt."

Regarding the track and field schedule, Lawrence said the competition schedule has been arranged by the government, so it will not be much affected. Traditions have to change, especially summer traditions and the seasons.

"For sure football and other fall sports will have (games) during this break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball having an event during the Christmas holidays, baseball and softball having an event during the spring break."

Another concern expressed was how effective the two weeks of rehabilitation would be. Crain said he didn't believe the two-week break would accomplish his goal and had heard comments from others who felt the same way.

"We were able to build 30 minutes of intervention into our every day (during the school year)," says Lawrence. "Thirty minutes of intervention was great, very powerful for our students in a small group setting… If we look at a five hour work day in that intervention period, that's 10 times what they get on a typical school day. So in five days they earn 50 times more than they earn on a normal school day. This one week intervention can be equal to 50 intervention days in one school year, 30 minutes at a time.

"Everything we do for these students will be done to help them succeed in the next quarter," said Lawrence. "I think we can do a lot of good this week. We've heard from other school districts in recent weeks seeing results with a one-week intervention."

As for Gateway, Laurence says it should be 30 days, and they're looking at ways to make it 30. The possibilities he mentions include 20 or 25 days in summer and five days in fall, or five days in fall and spring. .

"Next year, things will be easier because you have an extra week," said Lawrence. "Another week doesn't sound like much, but that extra week gives you a better chance to set yourself up for the summer."

Head of School Board Dr. John Bradley said he had doubts about the revised calendar, but the fact that the majority of interviewees supported him played a role in his decision to vote for his approval.

"I would vote for him knowing that we caused a lot of trouble for other people," said Bradley. "I'm sorry about that. But I also feel that we should do what most people want to do, with no reason not to, or multiple reasons."

At their January 25 meeting, board members agreed to move to a revised calendar concept, but had not adopted the actual calendar at the time.
