As we approach the halfway point of the semester, we look forward to spring break and the opportunity for all of us to re-energize and enjoy some well-deserved rest. I hope that your students will have time to relax and unwind during this time, and I also hope that many of them will be back home for spring break.

We've already had warm days on campus, and one of my favorite things to do is walk around the quad and talk to students, meet the puppies that run around, and occasionally throw a soccer ball around. It's great to see the campus waking up these days and we're all enjoying spending time outside in the beautiful valley.

I want to share some tips if your student is traveling over spring break. Please remind them of this and any other family safety plans you have:

We've had a few questions recently about how to help students when there are concerns about their whereabouts or safety, so we wanted to pass this on to parents. We want to make sure you have the most direct access to support and answers, so we have the following information to help you. If you are concerned about the immediate safety of a student, you may request a welfare check by calling the police department at (540) 568-6911. They will gather information and send an officer to make sure they are safe. If the Harrisonburg police need to be called, the police will tell you what to do next.

Our Dean of Students is another great resource and I encourage you to use her to report any concerns that do not require an immediate, immediate response through the Madison Cares referral form. The Dean of Students is designed to engage and support your students, and they can be an incredible resource if you have a problem or want to discuss your student. Also, although I am very active on social media, sending messages through these platforms is not the best way to get a response, especially in an emergency. The police station is the best place to start if you have an emergency, as officers and dispatchers are available 24 hours a day. As you may have heard, I try to get a few hours of sleep each night, so I don't always see your posts. If I need to attend, don't worry, the Harrisonburg Police Chiefs know where I live!

The last half of term is usually filled with an incredible amount of outdoor events and activities. Also, spring sports are starting, so I hope to see many of your students there. Encourage your student to come out and participate if they are not already doing so. The Dukes Weekly and Events Calendar is a great way to find out about many upcoming events. As the rest of the semester passes, we will gather with the families of the Class of 2022 to celebrate their graduation and their contributions.

Your students can invite their little brother/sister/relative/friend to campus for Sibling Day! Organized by the Parents Liaison Office, Sibs & Kids Day is a fun and informative day of events and activities for students aged 12-17 and their guests to share their college experience in a meaningful way.

This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2022, from noon to 8 p.m. Registration is free for students and $32 for guests. Members receive access to various campus events, meal tickets, a Sibs & Kids Day t-shirt and a goody bag.

A full schedule of events is planned for you and your guests, providing plenty of opportunities to explore the campus and share your college experience. Activities include an adventure ropes course, X-Labs activities, free time at the University Recreation Center, meals in both dining halls, a spring football game, a campus scavenger hunt, and more. Students who enroll at least half-time (UG-6 credits and GR-5 credits) in an approved program of study in the summer of 2022 may qualify for summer financial aid.

We will use information from both forms over the summer to determine eligibility for this type of funding: • Federal Ash Grant

Jmu Officially Joins Sun Belt Conference

If students expect to receive a federal grant, they must complete a summer aid application regardless of enrollment level. Receiving a Pell Grant in the summer will not reduce the award amount for the fall and spring. (The only exception to this is if the student becomes Pell eligible)

Conversely, borrowing Direct Student Loans during the summer will lower your loan eligibility the following fall and spring. For example… Juniors can borrow up to $7,500 during the school year, so if $4,000 is used in the summer, $3,500 will be split between the fall and spring.

The reverse selection of the room in the dormitory will take place from April 4 to 8. Talk to your student about where they plan to live next year? If not, now is a great time to do so. Other important dates for number selection are given below. You can make sure your student knows these dates!

March 22: Dependent and Honors housing forms are accepted until 5:00 p.m. March 28: Students with a signed housing contract are sent a room selection time

Additionally, the 2022-2023 senior buildings are shown below. All elite buildings are equipped with air conditioners and elevators.

App State Football Schedule Released

The Sun Belt released its 2022 football schedule earlier this month. James Madison football will play 10 FBS games and one non-conference FCS game. Family Day Off Saturday, October 1st vs. Texas State! Season tickets are already on sale, priority deadline is May 15. The passes offer the best seating options and value for fans and include one free parking pass with each account. Single game tickets will be available starting July 1.

UREC is excited to offer a new program called "Core & Connect" after spring break that intentionally connects students with each other in a positive and supportive group. We hope to help your Dukes make new friends, develop new healthy habits, and feel more comfortable while visiting UREC.

Core & Connect groups will meet with the Connection Coach twice a week for 4 weeks. The sessions include activities to introduce the group and other program members to the different areas of UREC. Learn more and encourage them to register with URECRegister.
