Edina School Calendar 2023 – We look forward to welcoming you to the new school year! There is a lot going on in our 7 choirs this year and our calendar is full of exciting activities, tours and shows.

Edina choirs have a beautiful tradition dating back to 1949 when Edina High School opened. The EHS Choir has always performed well in both state competitions and national festivals, winning numerous awards. We are part of the music department that won the Minnesota Music Educators Association Exemplary Program Award in 1998 and was recognized by the GRAMMY® Foundation in 2005 and 2007 as the "GRAMMY Signature School." Edina Public Schools Music won the NAMM Outstanding Community for Music Awards in 2012 and most recently in 2022!

There are many reasons for this success: caring management, good facilities and excellent music programs in primary and secondary schools are important factors. However, what makes EHS Choirs unique is its dedicated students and incredibly supportive parents.

Activities For Children & Youth

Hornet Chorale and Cougar Chorus are the new names and identity of the former Varsity SSA and Varsity TTB choirs. The new name references the nine-year (1972–1981) coexistence of Edina-East High School ("Hornets") and Edina-West High School ("Cougars"). The contribution of both schools has a great impact on our team to this day. At the September 13 meeting, the school board received two proposals for academic calendars for the years 2022-23 and 2023-24. The proposal was presented by representatives of the district calendar committee, which has 16 members, meeting 5 times since the beginning of August.

Both proposed options include a Labor Day start (due to construction), with the school year ending June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024; two-day break in MEA; two-week winter break; and a week of spring break.

The difference between the proposals is the employee's career development plan. Option A has four release days, similar to the schedule above. Option B eliminates the advance leave day and converts the eight hours into a professional development day. Board members like this option because it simplifies the schedule for all stakeholders: families, students, staff, and transportation.

Disciples Of Christ

A new element in the proposal is to use the first two days of kindergarten through fifth grade as the connection and assessment day. Today, teachers will meet with each student and family to set goals and take any necessary assessments. It is now practiced at Normandale Elementary School and in many other districts. The Commission sees this as an important opportunity to build relationships and understand the needs of students from the start of the new school year.

In July, the board approved a manual change document that sets the direction for the board of directors. The council then held an extensive discussion on the considerations, which included: learning assessment and data collection; time for the team of teachers to cooperate; teacher conference; build relationships with students; Student activities and construction schedules, just to name a few.

The Calendar Committee will meet again in the fall of 2022 to develop a calendar proposal for the 2024-25 school year, keeping the country on the approved academic calendar for the next two years.

Mayo High School Boys Hockey

The commission is expected to implement the 2022-23 and 2023-24 calendars at its Oct. 11 meeting. The school calendar for the 21-22 school year will be slightly different from last year as construction begins in April and does not require children to be in school until mid-June. Therefore, after discussions with the SAC and teachers on the calendar committee, important holidays are listed on the attached calendar.

In order for the construction company to get some work done, we start school the Tuesday after Labor Day. In the years 2022-23 we will return to the beginning of August. There will be three days that parents will be asked to drive as we will not have the bus as we will go to school on the three days that Edina will be out of school. You will also note, based on feedback from parents who completed the calendar survey, and due to construction work, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be closed on Thanksgiving instead of all week. These changes will bring us as close as possible to tracking Edina buses and meet our needs for years to come.

The calendar of events and activities will be available later in April or early May, after we have made a joint calendar of school and school activities in April.
