Academic Calendar Psu Spring 2023 – With a control center where students can talk to astronauts, the Rocket Club is building the first satellite in Oregon, the largest collection of asteroids in the Northwest, and more. Portland offers unique opportunities for students who want to explore space.

Does Penn State Have Any Nil Collectives
While researchers can predict how new technologies will behave in space (and test them in PSU drop towers), they may not know for sure until astronauts have a chance to test them. With telescience support, scientists can guide astronauts in experiments with samples sent from the PSU to the ISS.

"It was really cool. It was a great experience," says Mark Wasserman '20, a master's student in mechanical engineering who used the Telescience Support Lab several times to conduct experiments for his thesis.
In July, astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough completed tests of the water management system of the hydroponic plant that Wasserman operates on. "Fluids in space form spheres — imagine big drops," Wasserman said. "Using a very special container, we can get the liquid where we want it."

The researchers hope the work will lead to the development of lightweight, reusable systems that astronauts can use to grow plants in stable space.
Although these experiments are still in the early stages of the technology's development, Wasserman's research will have far-reaching implications—obvious.

"For example, for a Mars mission, it would be great if you could send a set of hardware and a bunch of seeds," he said. "The further you go, the more useful it is. The lighter it is, the more useful the system is."

Wasserman, who graduated from PSU in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, led students into the professor's office hours to explore his findings. Thus he first became involved in fluid mechanics research.

"If you see a professor doing interesting work, follow up and tell them you're really interested in future research opportunities," she says.
As the astronauts tested Wasserman's steam room, fruit punches and plants were felt to simulate realistic growing conditions.

The Portland State Space Association (PSAS for short) is a student-led space engineering team that develops state-of-the-art rockets and satellites.

PSAS students work together on cutting-edge space technology while learning business skills. This spring or summer, the team will head to Central Oregon to launch their latest rocket, Launch Vehicle 3 (LV3). Meanwhile, the team is hard at work on LV4, a rocket that pushes the boundaries of what is possible for a "voluntary" rocket. The LV4 design has a liquid fuel engine that can propel the rocket up to 100 km to the edge of space.

Great? PSAS students designed, built and delivered Oregon's first satellite (OreSat). Spaceflight, a Seattle company, will launch its satellite into low Earth orbit in January. And by the end of 2022, NASA will launch another PSAS-designed satellite from the International Space Station. The satellite collects data on the global distribution of high-altitude cirrus clouds as part of NASA's Climate Science Mission.
"PSAS is a terrorist interaction," says PSAS college advisor Andrew Greenberg. Unlike flight clubs at other universities, which are usually more astronaut-oriented, PSAS is a forum for all majors. "We get people from physics and mathematics. We have a number of traders who help with management and finance. PSAS also welcomes high school students, community college students and industry professionals, Greenberg noted.
With the collaborative nature of PSAS students, learn how to successfully work together in a professional team that will serve them well in college and beyond.

"We're building rockets and making better students," Greenberg said. "Students get hands-on, interactive, group learning. "They get the experience that they have nowhere else to go but manual labor."
After months of research, testing and development, the Portland Space Association (PSAS) is preparing to launch Oregon's first satellite.

We in Space is a student group for women, ethnic minorities, gender and allies to come together, explore different aspects of the space industry, and engage in outreach activities to increase diversity and inclusion in the space industry.

"Our motto: Find your place in space," says Katie Spivey '21, co-founder of We in Space and a master's student in mechanical engineering. "It's important to show students of all ages that they can still get jobs in the industry. You don't have to be an engineer to enter a space career. You don't have to be an astronomer. You can also have marketing, financial skills, fashion skills. "There are so many different parts you can go to that people don't really hear about."
Spivey is a recipient of the prestigious Brooke Owens Fellowship. As part of her career, she spent summers at rocket manufacturer United Launch Alliance. Spivey plans to work on launch vehicle dynamics (what she calls an "external rocket") after completing her master's degree at PSU.

ELVIS is a new type of microscope that will be sent to the International Space Station in 2023. ELVIS was developed by Jay Nadeau, associate professor of physics, and her research team, combining holographic and light field microscopes.
ELVIS is used by astronauts on the International Space Station to study how bacteria behave in microgravity. Unlike a traditional microscope, ELVIS allows astronauts to observe bacteria swimming in three-dimensional space.

"The cool thing is they're going to broadcast everything live and the astronauts are going to show us videos of what they're doing, so we'll be able to control the instruments from Earth and see the data. I'm doing it," Nadeau said.
A Look Ahead For Penn State Wrestling
ELVIS has the potential to answer some important questions about how bacteria evolve in space. "Theoretically, microgravity shouldn't affect bacteria. They're too small," Nadeau said. "However, starting with early experiments on space stations, people discovered that bacteria behaved very differently when exposed to microgravity, and even things like Salmonella became more dangerous."
These changes could be bad news for astronauts. "A lot of people don't know this, but astronauts are very sick. They suffer from a lot of intestinal infections, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections," Nadeau said. "So knowing how bacteria are affected by microgravity is very interesting for the health of astronauts."

Nadeau said the students played a key role in the development of ELVIS and will help work in the field of transportation, enabling the microscopes to operate from space. "We have to make sure we don't give anyone a computer virus," she said. "We need to set it up so that we have our own software and can launch it from Earth via a link to the ISS."
The hardest part is getting the bacteria to the space station without exposing the astronauts to potential biosecurity risks. "We want to send a closed bacteria lab, but the question is, can you keep them closed and happy?" Ask me.

The Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory at PSU is home to 2,400 different samples of asteroids, including asteroids from the meteorite belt and Mars.

"Portland State has the largest collection of publicly accessible asteroids in the Pacific Northwest," said geology professor Alexander Rzicka. Ruzicka founded the lab in 2003 with Melinda Hutson, a research assistant professor, and Richard Pugh, a Cleveland high school teacher and asteroid enthusiast. Unlike asteroid collections at other universities, Cascadia begins with a large donation from the Meteorite Lab.
