ST PETERSBURG, Fla. – The WTA on Monday released its tournament calendar for the first half of the 2022 season, which includes the Australian Summer of Tennis in January and the conclusion of the Wimbledon Championships in July.

The 49th year of the WTA begins in Australia, with two 250 tournaments in the first week at Adelaide International and Melbourne. In two weeks, the Sydney Tennis Classic will be visited, and the second Adelaide International Australian Open will be held before the start of the week of January 17.

The WTA Tour should follow its usual structure until the Court of Fire finale at Wimbledon in the coming months, with details of the remaining calendar to be published at a later date.
The first part of the season includes the Qatar Total Energy Open (Doha), BBNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells), Itau, Matua Madrid Open and Internazini BNL d'Italia (Roma) and WTA 1000 events. Eight events of WTA 500 and at least 15 WTA 250 events.

Why is Linz struggling to host the second week of Indian Wells? Assuming IW continues as normal, players of any seed can play their first IW matches on Monday as well, so early starters don't have much of a chance to get last-minute cards in Linz.

Tennis Australia has announced details of the 2022 Australian Open, with 17 major tournaments to be held before the Australian Open.
The WTA season opens in week 1 with three tournaments – the WTA 500 event in Adelaide (January 2 to January 9) and the WTA 250 event in Melbourne (January 3 to January 9).
This year the Adelaide International was held a week after the Australian Open and Iga Svetek was defeated by Belinda Bencic in the final.

The WTA 500 event in Sydney in week 2 will mark the return of women's tennis to the New South Wales capital for the first time since 2019. The only Sydney Tennis Classic (January 9-15) will be a joint ATP tournament.
Week 2 will see the Adelaide International (9-15 January) this time at the WTA 250 level.
The Australian Open qualifiers will be held at Melbourne Park from January 10 to 14. The first major of 2022 will be played between January 17 and January 30.
