Thousands of Oakland County School District students, teachers, principals and staff returned to their campuses Monday for the start of the 2022-2023 school year. Starting a new school year means starting school board and committee meetings again. Here's what you need to know about the board's changes, this week's meeting schedule and how to get involved.

In June, the board selected Kyra Mungia to replace District 6 administrator Shanti Gonzalez, who resigned in May. Mungia will serve the remainder of Gonzalez's term until Jan. 2, 2022. At that time, whoever is elected in November will be sworn in. It could be an antelope in competition. Mingia currently works in the office of Mayor Libby Schaaf as the Deputy Director of Education.

Richland High School

Linh Le, a senior at Oakland High School, also joins the board for the first time as one of its two directors. Le has been involved in student leadership at OUSD and previously served as Student Union President on the OUSD All-City Council. Student board directors are elected annually by their peers. Natalie Gallegos Chavez, who served as principal of students as a junior at Oakland High School last year, was re-elected and will remain in the position for her senior year.

The School Board meets twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, beginning on August 10th. Meetings are held in person at the La Escuelita campus at 1050 Second Ave. Meetings start at four o'clock. and a closed session for board members only, followed by a public session at 5:30 p.m. Or soon.

Committee meetings will also continue this month, including the Budget and Finance Committee, Institutions Committee, Constitutional Affairs Committee and citizen oversight committees. A calendar of upcoming meetings can be viewed online, and meeting agendas and recordings are also posted online.

Student Transit Pass Information

At each regular meeting, Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell provides updates on district initiatives, school highlights, COVID safety policies and other issues. On Wednesday, he will discuss recent enrollment numbers, which will fluctuate during the first few weeks of school as families finalize their school decisions. As of August 2, 34,835 students are enrolled at OUSD – similar to last year's enrollment of 34,428.

Luz Cazares, the director-elect, oversees the board's budget decisions as Oakland Unified is still paying off a state loan nearly 20 years ago. Cazares can vote or sit on any budget-related decision if he thinks it could hurt the district's finances.

Last month, Cazares emailed district leaders about several new positions, including electricians, gardeners, administrative assistants and counselors, and the board approved in June that all of the new positions would be funded by his one-time funding. . go Until employees identify the dollars available to finance them.

Cazares also warned that all new administrative office positions, except for the Title IX Coordinator, will remain in place until the promised Administrative Office review is completed. On Wednesday, the board will discuss those reforms and other budget adjustments.

Last year, the Oakland school board was the first in California to implement a COVID vaccination requirement for students. In a split vote, the board decided that all students age 12 and older should be vaccinated unless exempted by medical or personal belief. In January, the board decided to delay implementation of the vaccination requirement until now.

The board on Wednesday will reconsider the district's COVID-19 vaccination policy to better align with the California Department of Public Health, which requires student vaccinations but does not include such an exemption.

The Ousd School Board Is Back In Session. Here's What You Should Know
