The Klein ISD School Board approved the academic calendar for the 2021-2022 school year at its Jan. 12 meeting.

Required Annual Student Update Open Today Through August 5

The district sent the calendar request on Dec. 1, according to a statement on the district's website. There were 14,000 responses, and about 75 percent of respondents chose option A of the proposed schedule, which was the option unanimously approved by administrators.

Through the Klein2Go program, families were able to provide their students with lunch and breakfast via curbside pickup. Klein2Go has served nearly two million meals since Jan. 8, according to a district news release. You can pick up lunch and breakfast on Tuesdays for seven days at select campuses.

The new Klein2Go dinner pickup option is offered every Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at all Klein ISD high school facilities. Families will receive their child's favorite snack for seven days, and children under 18 can eat for free, the statement said.

Klein ISD held a convocation ceremony to celebrate the graduation of 34 students from the Vistas Middle School Program and Klein Success Academy.

The ceremony is held to mark the student's completion of the program, and both provide resources to help at-risk students complete high school at an accelerated pace.

"We celebrate our graduates from Vistas Middle School and Klein Success Academy and are proud of how they persevered and overcame many challenges," Klein ISD Superintendent Jenny McGowan said in an online district news release. "This moment is a true testament to the many ways available to Klein ISD students to achieve their goals and successfully move on to the next chapter of their lives."

Both programs provide extensive support and guidance from the school's faculty and build relationships with each student to help them learn and grow, the statement said.

"Clean Success Academy is focused on the future of our students," said Shelly Moore, Clean Success Academy Coordinator. "We know this program empowers our students to strive for success regardless of the obstacles they face."

Vistas High School program director Debbie Pennington said it was a year after the final applause ceremony, which is usually held three times a year, and she was more than ready to celebrate the students' achievements.

"The entire staff at the Vistas High School program and Klein Success Academy could not be more proud of our students for sticking to their goals and staying on course to complete their educational journey in Klein ISD," Pennington said. "We know it took a lot of hard work and perseverance from our students and the support of their families. Congratulations, graduates."

The Spring ISD School Board recognized Hirsch Elementary School second grade teacher Diane Moore for saving the life of a student who drowned during lunch on campus. At this month's school board meeting, Moore received the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award, or ABCD Award, for his actions, according to an ISD spring news release.

"In December, just before winter break, Mrs. Moore came to help a student who was choking at lunch," said Tiffany Dunn-Oldfield, Head of Innovation and Communications, in remarks at the meeting.

"Knowing there was no time to waste, he used his safety training to perform the Heimlich maneuver, clear the student's airway and resolve the dangerous situation," Dunn-Oldfield said. "We want to give him a round of applause for going above and beyond the call of duty and saving the life of one of our students."

Elementary and middle school students were encouraged to "read through" during their winter break, and prizes were awarded to those who spent the most time with Spring ISD books.

Three students and two students won the competition, and each student winner received a trophy and an Amazon Kindle tablet, according to an ISD spring news release.

Jocelyn Chapa, a fourth-grader at Eikenroth Elementary, received the award for the most read minute in the elementary school category, according to the release. Chapa loves to read, especially Harry Potter, said his mother, Jessica Benavidez.

"He's been a reader since he was young and has a huge book collection," Benavidez said. "It all started when he was little, when I would take him to different moments in history at the local library."

Maryam Neal, an eighth-grader at Roberson Middle School, won two awards for the most minutes read and the most books read by a middle school student. During the break he read 2,584 minutes and 62 books.

"I didn't expect to win, especially for the most read books," Neal said. "I didn't think I'd read so many books, but I'm still very excited. I knew I was reading too much because I followed it. It was 40 hours."

Bummel Middle School won the award for the most reading minutes in a middle school, the publication detailed, and the at-risk school's vice principal, Daphne Wilson, said the program is good not only for reading, but for literacy in general.

"We know that when our kids learn all the different principles of literacy, it sets them up for success across the board," Wilson said. "This means they are more successful at communicating. It makes them more aware of the world they live in and how they can contribute to that world.

Spring EIF teachers, principals and administrators gathered at training last week to show appreciation to their board for School Board Recognition Month.

"All members of the Spring ISD Board of Trustees are influential and play an important role on our campuses and in the district," Twin Creeks High School Principal Kenisha Williams said in a news release. "Impact may not be as immediate as a staff member, but it comes from creating the right environment and setting high expectations for student performance."

Spring ISD board members serve three-year terms and govern and lead the district's schools, with each trustee representing the district as a whole, according to a Spring ISD news release. Their duties include setting the district's goals, approving the annual budget, and electing the district superintendent.

"My service to Spring ISD has been an honor because of my passion for serving my students and community," said Spring ISD Board President Rhonda Newhouse. "Yes, I have spent over 40 wonderful years in school systems and I appreciate every moment, but don't exceed tonight in thanking our teachers, administrators and staff for the wonderful and great work you all do. We've gone through some challenges during this unprecedented time, and you've all stepped up."

The 2016 graduate of Lone Star College-University Park is a recently published author of the self-help book, Develop a Genius Mindset: Unleash Your Full Potential and Achieve Incredible Success.

Author Jesse Rodriguez wrote the book for Purist Publishing, and the book reflects his research into statistics and facts that show that successful people are guided, goal-oriented, highly motivated and disciplined. An LSC-University Park press release stated:

Rodriguez, who graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown with a bachelor's degree in technical communication, credits LSC-University Park and UHD with her self-sufficiency and confidence, and her education gave her the foundational skills to do just that. The author described the traffic in detail.

Long before he became a student, he was at LSC-University Park, the office of Compaq Computers, where he worked as a janitor. He wrote about the experience in an essay that won an award from the Lone Star College Foundation.

"I walked the dark, lonely halls of Compaq as a janitor, cleaning his desks and trying to make an honest living," Rodriguez wrote in the article. "When it came time to pursue my dream of going back to school, LSC-University Park provided the perfect, if not disastrous, answer. The college was very convenient and very close. I have no excuse not to participate."
