Comal Isd 2023-24 Calendar – Comal Independent School District is an innovative and rapidly growing district with more than 27,300 students in grades K-12. With an "A" grade and a score of 93, Comal ISD ranks among the top school districts in the state of Texas based on student achievement, scholastic progress and gap reduction. This is the district's second consecutive "A" grade.

Thanks to more than 40 local business partners, Comal ISD students are getting real-world experience this summer as lifeguards, camp counselors, tour guides, waiters and more. Many of these jobs and internships won't end when the first bell rings on Aug. 23, and students can find opportunities on the district's website.

Comal ISD is hosting two student immunization clinics on Monday, August 8 at Canyon Middle School and Pieper Ranch Middle School. Participants must register by Thursday, August 4.
The Comal ISD Board of Trustees has opened the application process for the district superintendent search. Applications are accepted until Monday, August 15.
Kaleb Burch's duck tape tuxedo was among the top five designs in the 22nd annual Duck Stuck Ribbon Prom Scholarship Contest. He used 10 rolls of duck tape and spent 30 hours creating his winning checkered tuxedo.

Comal ISD's Canyon Lake High School Class of 2022 has a new Salutatorian, Macie Goodson. District administrators apologized to Macie for a miscalculation that initially placed him third in the graduating class of 225.
Comal ISD Smithson Valley High School Class of 2022 has a new valedictorian, Ava Roat. District administrators apologized to Ava for a counting error that initially placed her as healthy in the graduating class of 706.

Annually, the representative of the EE. USA Chip Roy presents the Outstanding Senior Award to graduates of Texas' 21st Congressional District who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, integrity and diligence.
Note: The release date of STAAR student results in grades 3-8 has been revised to accommodate additional data analysis. Elkhart Independent School District
The Comal Independent School District board voted unanimously to change Superintendent Andrew Kim's contract, but the district isn't ready to release details yet.
Kim, the district's superintendent since 2012, was given a closed-door performance review by administrators at the end of the board's monthly meeting on Jan. 27, which lasted until 2 a.m. the next day.
They voted 6-0 to "modify" Kim's contract. Chairman Jason York confirmed that the deal includes a one-year extension, although compensation details are being negotiated.

"We voted unanimously to extend the contract, but the details surrounding the compensation are what hold things together," York said Wednesday. "Because we arrived so late on Friday morning, we were unable to finalize these details. The lawyers need time to review everything before Mr. Kim and I sign."
Steve Stanford, assistant communications officer, said details of the agreement will be posted on the district's website. York said he and Kim's lawyers are talking "almost daily" and he hopes to see a deal finalized by the end of this month.
In January 2021, the board approved an 18-month contract extension for Kim from June 30, 2024 to January 31, 2025, and a 5.4% salary increase from $220,000 to $232,000 per year.

York said the salary increase includes an additional six months between Kim's annual evaluations, that the board moved from June to January and that Kim was one of the lowest-paid executives in the Austin-San Antonio area.
"It remains by far one of the lowest paid in the region," York said Wednesday. "When you look at the student population, the size of the school district and the academic performance and what the district has accomplished, it's very underpaid, underpaid as are our teachers."
York took issue with social media posts that speculated Kim's raise would top $20,000 when teachers didn't get their normal raise last year. On Nov. 2, voters approved a tax ratification election (TRE) that increased the district's property tax rate to $1.2920 per $100 of property assessment to compensate faculty and staff.

"It helps us fill that gap," York said. "This year we gave teachers a 3% raise that lasted until the end of last year, we will have another 3% salary increase for them in the 2022-23 budget and another 3% in the 2023-24 budget.
"So teachers will definitely see pay increases of 15% to 18% over the next three years based on TRE alone."
Comal ISD doesn't always announce the terms of a superintendent's contract immediately after approvals, Stanford said, and it doesn't always include raises for Kim, hired in July 2012 under a three-year contract that paid $188,000 a year.

Kim received a two-year extension with no salary increase in 2013 and one-year contract extensions in 2014 and 2015; terms for both were not immediately announced.
"We will compensate Mr. Kim fairly and appropriately," York said. "We expect that to happen in the next few weeks and definitely by the end of this month."
