While Georgetown County students may face more scheduling breaks ahead, they will face returning to school sooner as the district plans its school calendar for the next two years.

Aiken County School Board To Vote On 2023 24 Calendar Tuesday

GEORGETOWN. In the future, Georgetown students may get more days off, but they will start school earlier under proposed changes to the district's school calendar for the next two years.

District Human Resources Director Chalice Waits told the school board at a Jan. 18 meeting that when planning the calendar, the committee saw other South Carolina school districts moving to a modified year-round format and wanted to follow suit.

The revised year-round calendar still allows eight weeks of summer vacation and still requires students to attend classes for 180 days, but those days will be spread more widely throughout the year.

West Virginia School Calendar 2022 And 2023

The significant difference between the two calendars is that students will have one week in each quarter. Traditionally, students have one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for spring break.

Pupils now get a week off in October, November and April as well as the usual two weeks at Christmas in a modified year-round version.

Beginning with the 2023-24 school year, teachers begin on July 26 and students retire on August 2. The last day of the semester is December 20 and the academic year ends on May 24.

This school year, teachers returned on August 11th and students started on August 18th. Traditionally, the first semester after the Christmas break ends in mid-January. School ends on June 3.

To transition to the new schedule, the district plans a transition year in 2022-2023, which is more like the traditional calendar, but with teachers and students returning to school earlier than before.

Teachers start the next academic year on August 1st and students return to the classroom on August 8th. The last day of the semester will be December 16, 2022, not this year when it ended on January 13.

"I love the idea of ​​ending the term in December," school board member Bill Gaskins said of the proposed changes. "Instead of shortening that period between our students' return and the start of the second semester."

Waits said one of the committee's goals is to end classes before Memorial Day in the future.

The proposed new calendar will now be sent to district staff and the public for feedback, with a first reading expected at the Feb. 1 school board meeting.

The Aiken County Board of Education, by a vote of 6 to 1, with two members absent, approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the changed calendar, students have a shorter summer and instead take two weeks of vacation in the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks in each semester will be a remedial week, allowing students in need of academic assistance to receive it.

In the revised 2023-2024 calendar, students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall vacation is scheduled for July 2-13. October from 2.-6. October as a week of intercessory prayer. The Thanksgiving break will be the 22nd-24th. November. Christmas break for students will be from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring Break will last from December 1 to 12. April, with Holy Week set for 1.-5. April 2024 The last course day is Thursday 30 May 2024

Other breaks on the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; weather make-up day Friday 20 October; Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15; holiday and President's Day on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; weather makeup day Thursday, March 28; and Good Friday, Friday 29 March 2024.

Board member Jason Crane was the only one to vote against the calendar. During the meeting, he reiterated his concerns about how the calendar would affect several programs, including athletics, band music and Gateway's performing arts program.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that a shorter summer … will affect athletics, the group and the Gateway," Crane said after the meeting. – I think the county will handle this, but I also feel that it is just a big minus for us. I voted for it with my conscience."

Crane added that while he supports the concept of a modified calendar, only two weeks of breaks each semester gives him a break.

"…I'm just not sure we need two weeks for these breaks," Crane said. "I think one week will be enough, but the board voted on what we voted for and I will support that in the future." ". ".

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be difficult for the band to rehearse because summer camp usually lasts three weeks. But there are other options for CEOs.

Lawrence noted that the competition is scheduled by the state and that there are multiple school schedules in South Carolina. He also suggested that a week-long camp be held in the summer and that intercessory periods be used for additional band camps.

"Yeah, you're used to three-week group camps in the summer, but how about one week of group camps in the summer and using the extra periods for additional group camps," Lawrence said. "Two weeks at the group camp in the summer and another one in the autumn. I'm just saying that people have to look at things a little differently and adapt to that."

As for sports schedules, Lawrence said competition schedules are determined by the state, so they won't be affected much. Training needs to be adapted, especially summer training and timing.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely have (games) this offseason," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball during Christmas break, baseball and softball during spring break."

Another problem was how well the two-week fix would work. Crane said he's not sure the two-week break will serve its purpose, and he's heard feedback from other people who felt the same way.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"We can assign 30 minutes of intervention to each of our days (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our students in a small group setting… If we look at a five-hour day during this intervention time, that's 10 times more than a regular school day. So in five days, they get 50 times more than a regular school day. A one-week intervention could potentially equate to 50 days of intervention during the school year for 30 minutes at a time."

"Everything we do for these students will be about helping them succeed in the next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can make a big difference this week. A few weeks ago we got word from the school district that the week-long effort had shown results."

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days and they want to make it 30 days. The options he mentioned included 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, it will be easier because you will have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week won't help
