The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting on Tuesday.

School Board members voted to move to a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year. at the annual meeting on January 25th. However, prior to the approval of the calendar itself, the council members had several questions that they wanted answered.

At the March 1 meeting, Superintendent King Lawrence spoke on several topics brought to his attention by board members. One of the topics was how the intervention would be carried out.

"It's really about taking care of the students who need it the most," Lawrence said. "Let's look at 20% of students with different scores. I think our main indicators are indicators of academic progress, we also have things like the fast transition program, we look at grades at the end of the year, in high school we look at student progress in this. "

School board member Brian Silas asked if the mediation should last a week. Lawrence said no, some school districts work three days, four days or five days. Board member Dwight Smith also raised concerns about whether students would benefit from two weeks of mediation during the school year instead of additional mediation time during the summer.

"I just don't feel like we're going to give our kids the kind of service we're talking about," Smith said.

Athletics / Overview

Crane also asked how long the summer break would be. Lawrence said the first summer break in the 2023 school year will be six weeks, and next year it will be seven weeks. This is due to spring 2023 release dates.

Lawrence said this should not affect the athletic schedule and would require some adjustments to the group's training schedule.

It was also noted in previous meetings that if the modified calendar does not work, the school district can always revert to the normal school calendar.

Georgia School Calendar 2022 And 2023

Lawrence told council members that the calendar would be put to a vote at the next meeting on Tuesday. The administration's recommendation will be to approve the calendar proposal for the 2023-24 school year.

Proposed revised draft calendar for 2023-2024. Students will begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Autumn holidays are scheduled for 14-13 hours. October 2-6. in October as an intermediate week. The Thanksgiving break will be November 22-24. Christmas holidays for students will be held from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring Break will run from April 1 to 12, and Holy Week from April 1 to 5. April 2024. The last day of school will be Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Other breaks on the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Weather Correction Day on Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr Day January 15; Holiday and President's Day Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; Weather forecast for Thursday, March 28; and Good Friday on Friday, March 29, 2024.

"The proposed calendar provides time for intervention and enrichment, and also allows the first semester to be completed before the winter break," the agenda for the meeting on Tuesday said.
